Mexican Police Crackdown on Migrant Caravan

INTERNATIONAL: Mexican security forces have come down heavy on a new migrant caravan bound for the United States border. Armed with riot shields and batons they intercepted and blocked the passage of around 400 people from Central America, Haiti and Venezuela. Several people were arrested. Hundreds of migrants, many accompanied by children or carrying babies in their arms, fled for the banks of the River Huixtla. The Mexican National Guard and National Institute of Migration have been accused of using excessive force. Local priest and migrant advocate, Heyman Vazquez, described the early morning swoop as an "inhumane" and "cruel" abuse of power that spread fear and alarm. The Mexican government recently condemned acts of violence captured on video against a previous caravan, but authorities continue their crackdown, with President Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador saying he wants undocumented migrants to stay in Southern Mexico.

A missing three-year-old boy has been safely rescued after spending three nights out in the open. Anthony “AJ” Elfalak from New South Wales’ Hunter region is mute and autistic, and was reported missing three days ago. He was found drinking water from a creek in the town of Putty, around 150 kilometers northwest of Sydney. Questions are being raised about the case though. Missing for a full three days, he was found barely 500m from his home. Police say the little boy was in good spirits and was smiling when he was found. He is being treated for dehydration and some minor cuts and bruises.

Police found a 40-year-old man, a 33-year-old woman and a 3-month-old boy dead from gunshot wounds in one of the homes. The family dog had also been shot. In the home next door, deputies found the body of a 62-year-old grandmother. An 11-year-old girl had also been shot multiple times but survived. The shooter has been identified as former Marine Corporal, Bryan James Riley, who had no connection to the victims.
